BOISE, Idaho (CB2) — The start of the college football season is more than half a year away, but Boise State is back on the practice field this week.
Thursday, March 2 was Boise State's first spring practice, one of 15 practices allowed by the NCAA in the springtime for FBS teams.
For quarterback Taylen Green, it's his first full offseason as the starter, after taking over for former Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier midway through last season.
Green spoke about his offseason, noting several areas he's working on as he gets set for his first full season as the starter.
"Taking my game to the next level is, just communicating, not being silent," Green said. "Telling guys what to do, telling guys where to lineup, just taking command and being assertive in what I want and what I feel like Bush wants for the team."
One area off the field that Green wants to improve in is the film room.
"I really want to work on just getting in the film room, just knowing defenses and knowing pre-snap where I'm going to go, just getting the ball out quicker," Green said. "And what I'm really focusing on right now is my footwork."
Wide receiver Latrell Caples also became a starter last year, recording four touchdowns and 87 yards in the team's Frisco Bowl win over North Texas. Caples praised Green's work ethic, noting his growth as a quarterback.
"He's here later than some of the GA's (graduate assistants), some of the coaches; he's up here all day getting work in. I've seen him just go outside, spot catch with him, so he's just grinding and he's ready to step into that role and I'm so excited to see it."
Overall, Broncos head coach Andy Avalos was pleased with the team's first practice.
"Obviously there's some things that we can clean up, being the first day of practice, but that's why we're out there, right," Avalos asked rhetorically. "It was a really good first day. It was good the see the quarterbacks' operation with our new offense. (For) being for the first day it was pretty clean."
The team's spring game is Saturday, April 8th at Albertson's Stadium.
Schedule Announcement
Just after the team's first practice ended, the Mountain West announced the full conference football schedule for 2023. The major change coming is the elimination of divisions.
The Mountain West had two six-team divisions last year (BSU played in the Mountain Division), but now the conference is shifting to a 'pod'-style setup.
In the pod system, Boise State will play two Mountain West teams every year (New Mexico and Utah State), while playing six other Mountain West schools. At the end of the year, the two teams with the best conference record will face off in the championship rather than the division winners.
The Broncos' first conference game is September 22, at San Diego State. It will be the first time the Broncos play at Snapdragon Stadium, which opened last year. The full schedule can be found here.
