The writer, director, and producer suffered pancreatic cancer for 13 months and finally gave in to the disease. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by his loved ones at his home in Pasadena.

Manny Coto was one of three children born to his parents on June 10, 1961, in Havana, Cuba. According to the records, his mother Norma who was a teacher fled to Orlando, Florida during the Fidel Castro regime and that was where Manny was raised alongside his sister, Normi Coto, and brother, Juan Carlos Coto.
At the time, his father Manuel Coto, a doctor was forced to stay back in Havana but later joined his family.
